Utz Certified - Fazenda da Logoa
Sustainability Conditions at Fazenda da Lagoa are ideal for the sustainable production of premium coffees. Small streams from at least 33 natural springs on the estate gradually converge into two small rivers. These are a distinctive feature of the plantation as well as a valuable source of life for numerous plants and provide a habitat for animals. Woodlands and swamp areas represent an important ecological compensation zone on the plantation and help maintain a healthy biodiversity.
As grazing and bushland areas are going to be planted with coffee over the coming years, ecological compensation zones will also be further expanded - ultimately covering 20% of the total farm area.
A sustainable approach to coffee farming also offers direct benefits for farm workers. Accommodation and sanitary facilities for currently 15 families living on the farm have been improved. Farm workers are provided with suitable clothing for their specific tasks on the farm and moreover receive a permanent employment status thus enabling them to join the Brazilian social welfare system, which ensures a number of important social services like health care. In order to ensure an effective, sustainable coffee production, all permanent employees receive specific training to further develop their skills.
Utz Certification
The UTZ CERTIFIED program provides the assurance of responsible coffee production and sourcing that coffee drinkers expect. It answers two crucial questions for the global coffee chain:
- Where does the coffee come from?
- How was it produced?
The UTZ CERTIFIED program is based on the UTZ CERTIFIED Code of Conduct: a set of social and environmental criteria for responsible coffee growing practices and efficient farm management. Coffee producers who are UTZ CERTIFIED comply with this Code of Conduct.
